I found myself on a Thursday afternoon with a few hours to spare before I had to attend an evening work event so I decided that hey movies with The Rock in them are usually a bit of fun why don’t I just go waste a couple of hours watching Skyscraper. While the trailer itself had been a bit “hmmm yeah okay maybe” and the poster was kind of silly showing the jump from the crane to the building I figured I’d give it a shot anyway.
I went into this movie expecting it to be the dumb silly style of fun/action that you see in other movies like Jumanji or Rampage, but it actually played out as a much more serious action movie which I genuinely found myself enjoying. The concept and story itself isn’t original and is predictable the whole way through but the fact that I found myself getting really into some scenes and holding my breath in anticipation at some of the more tense action sequences says something about the direction and film making as a whole.
Don’t get me wrong, there was humour, but it definitely wasn’t the usual comedic style of film that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is becoming known for. In fact I found myself comparing it to Die Hard at some points. Now hey, before you start criticising me for that comparison think about it, an unnecessarily muscled up husband is trying to break into a high rise building to save his family and defeat the bad guy. It’s a concept that has worked before and continues to work in this movie too. Also, anything that has someone doing unrealistic stunts like climbing around the outside of a building 200 stories in the air because the switch to deactivate something is of course in a stupid outside location you know will be a ‘dumb but fun’ watch.
Besides Johnson in his beefed up action element, the wife if played by Neve Campbell who I have loved since the days of Scream so it was kind of great seeing her back on the big screen and kicking ass (literally) to help save the day. Ultimately if you’re looking for an easy watch, something that doesn’t require a lot of serious thought, and you’re keen on action, then give this a look. You may laugh at the stupidity at times, or just the random humour that is scattered throughout (Duct Tape anyone?) but overall it does the job that’s intended and that’s something that can’t be said for a lot of other movies out there.
My Score: 5/10
Watch If You Like: Die Hard….seriously, see my above reasons. Otherwise action movies or movies staring The Rock or you just want to see if he can make that crazy jump from the crane.
