Ever since watching the trailer I was so keen to see this movie and upon watching last night (thanks to old bosses who have access to streaming links BEST!) I was not disappointed. In three words; This. Movie’s. Awesome!! While the story itself is a bit on the standard futuristic side with automated cars, houses, robotic implants and A.I. essentially controlling everything on a daily basis, there are also elements of ‘days gone by’ throughout is kind of fun. By this I mean the fact that Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) is/was a mechanic and works on muscle cars and his wife doesn’t understand how he likes them because they don’t drive themselves or talk back. Or a later scene that has him paying for something and receives the comment “Ooo paper money, how fun”.

Upgrade is directed by Leigh Whannell, who I have been a fan of since Saw days and my long time admiration of him has only been strengthened by this movie. I can’t wait to see what he comes out with next.

Okay….what I really wanted to talk about and my absolute favourite part of the movie were the action/fight sequences. They are honestly incredible to watch with the robotic movements and absolute beatdowns that are given out to the ‘bad guys’ which are all managed by the A.I. implant ‘Stem’ while Grey just looks around and makes random hilarious commentary.

UPgrad 1

The biggest shock to me, however, was the fact there was no holding back on the level of gore in the fight scenes. While it completely doesn’t offend me and fits totally within the feel and context of the movie, I was just absolutely not expecting it.
I honestly felt bad for my neighbour during the first Stem takeover fight, which I was thoroughly enjoying until the end (spoiler) when Grey/Stem sliced open the guys head with a freakin’ knife! Yes I did cry out and yes it was followed by a very loud “what the fuck?!?!” and then laughter and then “this is AWESOME!”.

All of the action scenes in this movie were executed so well, I was on the edge of my seat in every…single…one. Then there was the ending, oh my god that ending!!!…………okay no more spoilers just watch and see how it turns out. Trust me it’s a good one, you won’t be disappointed.

My Score: 7/10

Watch If You Like: Ex Machina or TAU or any other futuristic sci-fi/kind of creepy horror-ish movie…….or if you’re Leigh Whannell fan.
