Where do you I start with this psychedelic mind trip of a movie? I mean part of me is still like what the hell just happened?? While the other part of me is like…..awesome!!
Honestly the first third of the movie I was constantly questioning if the events were real or if it was all an illusion. Basically, it is this slow moving drama about a husband (Nicolas Cage) coming home from work to his wife (Andrea Riseborough) at their cabin in the woods. Okay people, any horror movie ever will tell you that a cabin in the woods is asking for trouble and this is no exception so let’s all agree to NEVER buy a damn cabin in any wood ever! But as I was saying it is a slow-moving drama, honestly a bit dull but with a spattering of really weird and creepy scenes leaving me to question where the horror was until suddenly BOOM bad shit happens and the movie does like a complete genre 180. While I knew….I literally knew it was a horror movie I just had not expected anything like what happened and it was brilliant. It is just pure creepy, crazy, gore filled and weird! Oh and the masterpiece…..Mr Nicolas Cage who I have always said and will continue to say plays an amazing crazy/bad guy. The whole second half of the film is just him on a revenge rampage with no real explanation as to why certain things happen *cough cough* just collecting guns from a random guy in the forest…what?? But honestly, I didn’t even care. The important facts were there why, who, when and ultimately it just made such a great watch that I didn’t find myself caring about anything else except yelling out the occasional YES!!! Or WHAT THE FUCK?!?!
As previously mentioned, this is a horror film but before you quickly say OH HORROR I LOVE IT it’s not the average jump scare horror film. It’s a film that is very slow paced at times yet just has a constant uneasy feeling about it. This is aided by a fantastic use of visual aids that really leave you shocked at times and also feeling very unsettled. Also, as my opening line suggested, it’s a psychedelic mind trip. Literally! One of the factors in the story-line is about extremely potent LSD which is boosted by a number of scenes that are heightened by some really outlandish and unnatural colour filters, strange paced scenes and audio tracks that jolt the senses. All of this is, in my opinion and I hope I’m right, to give the implication of an acid trip. This was also why I found myself questioning the reality in the film at the beginning because it was such a normal film/story but these moments kept happening and I couldn’t figure out where reality ended and dream began. Ultimately it didn’t matter but it really did make for an interesting watching experience.
My Score: 7/10
Watch If You Like: The Witch or any other slow paced artistic but insanely gory horror movie you may have seen……or if you like that description.
