I stumbled across this trailer in my random browsing through Netflix and thought why not, it looks kinda cute, may as well check it out. Basically, in case you don’t know, it’s the story of Mai who is a teenage girl living in a time where robots and A.I. are everywhere and basically run everything that is used on a daily basis. Like literally, even the instant noodle cups are little robots that cheer you on as you eat. It’s creepy and hilarious and slightly terrifying that society may actually come to this. But sorry, side-tracked, anyway her father left at a young age and her mother is so obsessed with everything robot related thing that basically ignores Mai and this results in her growing to be a moody, chip on the shoulder, lonely teenager. Sprinkle in some crazy antics, a secret robot that becomes a friend and an evil villain and it makes for a fun, though rather unoriginal, movie.
As I am not an animation expert, I don’t feel I can comment on any styles or appearance with any sort of merit but I will say…..it didn’t look cheap or bad. It was bright and glossy and felt like a digital/robot like experience so ten points to that. The voice cast, however, was just great. I mean John Krasinski, Charlynne Li, Jason Sudeikis and David Cross now if that doesn’t sound like a fun group to you then get away from this article and go find some good taste in actors!!
Overall, it’s a family friendly animation that has a nice story about friendship, happiness and not letting anger consume you. As I said at the start, it isn’t a very original story, but it does have a lot of important factors and plays heavily to the fact that technology is already a large part in society and has every appearance of heading to a reality like one in this film. Also, robot fights and a hilarious bad-mouthed dog oh…oh and some really fun scenes that are extremely similar to those in other well known movies. Pack this in with a bunch of laughs and even some *sniff sniff* no dammit I’m not crying, it’s dust in my eye I swear now excuse me while I go find myself a robot buddy……yeah it’s a recommended from me.
My Score: 6/10
