Please Note: The Following May Contain Spoilers (But I Tried Hard Not To)
Alright yes, this is a re-watch but I randomly got the urge and discovered that all 4 were on Netflix (oh Netflix how you just know what I need at the right time) so watch I did and here we go.
Can I start by saying that I have read the books way back when these movies were first announced and, sorry to all the book fanatics, the movies are so much better! Normally I don’t say that either but in this case I think it’s valid……or also maybe I’ve just forgotten the books and blinded by the movies that I watched so recently. Oh well, whatever, movies yay!
So back to the movie. Back to the start. Back to….I volunteer as tribute! But lets dial it back to a few things before that which annoyed me on this viewing, mainly the relationship between Katniss and her mother which you can see in the film is tense but there is no real explanation why and then after Katniss is the tribute there is one brief mention that the mother fell apart previously at the death of her father. It’s things like this that make me think they are relying too heavily on the fact that people will have read the books. Like yes I have but what if I hadn’t huh??? Gosh!
But moving right along to the cast, the costumes, the brilliance that is the capital and how it was created. It is just so visually perfect and everyone is cast so well that it’s honestly like these characters were written for them. I mean Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson & Elizabeth Banks just make the most perfect on screen group with such opposite personalities that are portrayed so well and any emotional scene by any of them….oh my heart!
The story itself is actually quite powerful and while it’s a story written a while ago now, somehow I found some of the themes and aspects scarily fitting today. The only thing I really hated watching was the fake relationship between Katniss & Peeta. Ugh it’s just so cringe!! Yes yes I know it’s meant to be and I know it’s her playing the game to keep them alive but he seems so desperate and she is just so much stronger than him and……okay to be fair I was always team Gale this early on so sorry Peeta but no chance buddy.
***Aside, I’m listening to Eminem at the moment and he just mentioned Hunger Games….ooo creepy***
So deep themes aside, The Hunger Games is a great watch with action, emotion, scandal and a powerful female lead. I always say that I enjoyed this movie more than I ever thought I would and this recent viewing hasn’t changed that. I was into every moment as much as I was the first viewing which is definitely why it became a 4 movie marathon (over 2 days because job and sleep and stuff).
My Score: 7.5/10
Watch If You Like: The books or the Maze Runner or Divergent Movies…..though Hunger Games is way way better. Action/Adventure….you like it? Watch this
