Hunger Games 2 everyone….that’s right this movie marathon (thanks Netflix….feel free to sponsor me) is continued. So where did we leave off? Oh yes Katniss & Peeta won the games, President Snow showed his evil-er side with the game keeper and everyone went back home to live in the weird mostly empty Victory Village in district 12. Oh and if anyone calls spoilers for this recap my only response is why are you reading a review about a sequel if you haven’t seen the first one??
So this film is a bit, do I say ,darker than the first? I mean the first movie wasn’t all kittens and candy but it was ultimately a film where the heroes do beat the bad guy as much as a bad guy could be beat in the hunger games. But part 2 is where you start to see the cracks in society, how bad things are getting and Katniss starts to witness that people have started seeing her as the hero or the saviour. Then soldiers start killing people for peacefully protesting (I mean this stuff would never happen in reality right???????) and then the big one, the rule change……only previous victors can go back into the games GASP! Once again the cast of this movie is just so top notch with every emotion shown just blazing out of the screen. The viewer can feel every minute of agony at that little reveal and then we get to the games themselves and meet a whole new collection of characters who are each so unique and strange and brilliantly represented that I once again bow down to and applaud the casting directors of this film. Everyone was just perfect, so much perfect.
Once again not a fan of the Peeta & Katniss story-line in this movie but unlike last time it’s not because it was too cringe it was more that it seemed too forced. Logically they should be close because of their experience but it’s a weird jumble of distant from each other to ohhh fake couple again to honest friendship to hey kind of love you back to honest friendship to oh my god where’s Peeta?!?!?!? Any time it was honest friendship always seemed like the most genuine and easiest to watch. Everything else just didn’t appear to mesh well on the screen and while I’m not sure if it was intentional or not I’m just sticking with it was difficult to watch and took me out of the enjoyment of the movie each time. This is in no way any judgement on the characters themselves as I do think they are both portrayed really strongly it’s just the thing that has them working together so well in some scenes seemed to really be missing in others. Also…..still team Gale so there’s that.
The story in this one I found to be much more of a link or a connection between episode 1 and the final episodes. While that isn’t a bad thing, it did mean I knew that the whole thing wasn’t going to have a finalised conclusion but was just going to be a fun ride from point A to point B. And yes it was a fun ride and yes I did enjoy it and yes it did had me loving the fact a big budget film can provide some much variety and enjoyment on a screen (monkeys, tidal wave, lightening strike) but that ending oh my…..cliffhanger much! So as I didn’t ever view this at the cinema with the big wait between films OH MY GOD HOW DID YOU COPE? I just had to wait one night before clicking next on my fabulous streaming service to find out what happened next.
My Score: 6.5/10
Watch If You Like: The Hunger Games, obviously. Or any of the other thing I mentioned on the last review….go check that out for suggestions 🙂
