Having seen so many alien invasion films in my movie loving life, you think I’d be rolling my eyes at another and yet, after watching the trailer I was so keen to click play and check it out. This was likely due to the fact that the story revolved around a father who had prophetic dreams about an invasion while his family and friends thought he was crazy until….the invasion happened (insert spooky music here). While we all know an alien invasion movie is always good value, I wanted to see for myself if a dream prophecy story line was any good or if it ruined it.

So opinions first…..Extinction is genuinely a great Sci-Fi movie. The dream factor was actually a small but very important factor in the overall story and honestly I think it worked really well. It helped lift an average invasion story up to something a bit different with some really great twists mixed in for fun. There were a couple of times when I was so convinced that I had figured it all out, only to discover that nope I was so wrong and what they had done was way better than I had given them credit for.Extinvtion 2

While the cast were great in their respective rolls, even the kids I guess who just acted like…kids, I did spend most of the film not really being blown away by any of the performances. At the end though, my mind had changed a bit and while it probably was just me just using the twist in the story to create an excuse I like to think that it was a genuine long play that rewarded the viewer in a story line reveal. Or maybe I also just don’t like to think negative about actors if I can help it because they were good, not great but good!

Overall a combination of story, action, tension and plot twists really helped to make this a great viewing experience.

My Score: 7/10

Watch If You Like: Annihilation, Tau or just if you’re a science fiction fan.
