So, dance school anyone?
Stars: Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Doris Hick
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Synopsis: Susie (Dakota Fanning) is a young woman from Idaho who has dreamed her whole life of attending an elite dance school in Berlin and when her dreams finally seem to be coming true, she quickly realizes that the head teachers are not the simple happy women they pretend to be. This alongside some mysterious disappearances and suspicious events at the school, it looks like not everything is just about dance at the academy.
Opinion: I don’t know where to start with this film, I mean I honestly spent the first half of it totally confused yet completely captivated at the same time. This was followed by many announcements of “what the hell is happening?!?!” then a final half hour of some serious brain exploding WTF moments I’ve ever seen. Now, I know what you’re thinking, wow you’re not selling this film very well but honestly there was never a moment through the whole thing where I wasn’t glued to the screen and completely caught up in every moment that was happening. Even discovering today that Tilda Swinton also played the old man literally blew my mind all over again. Yes, I had spent the whole movie wondering what was slightly weird about the old guy, was he just wearing too much makeup? Was it a young person made to look old? Was I just being weird because the movie was weird? But nope it was Tilda and I had absolutely no idea so well done makeup department well done. Ultimately I want so badly to say I enjoyed this movie but I don’t feel like that’s the right word for it. It’s not an enjoyable movie it’s a total mind fuck, weird as hell experience that captivated me until the end where I was left feeling unsatisfied yet satisfied all at the same time
Scare Factor: It’s not a horror film in the typical sense of jump scares and such, but it is horrifying in an unsettling itch you can’t scratch kind of way. Not one for the feint of heart and be prepared for some really unsettling scenes.
