Movie Review: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

buster scruggsThe greatest collection of short stories you didn’t know you had been missing.

Stars: Tim Blake Nelson, Clancy Brown, James Franco, Liam Neeson, Tom Waits
Directors:
Ethan Coen, Joel Coen

Synopsis: A collection of 6 short stories, all based in the Old West, each focusing on a vastly different situation. Including a Singer, a bank robber, a gold miner, a touring artist, a wagon train and a collection of people in a stage coach.

Opinion: In typical Coen brothers style, I was blindsided with awesome within the first 10 minutes and completely glued to the screen and each story for the 2 hour duration. Each tale is just so different from the last, keeping me captivated by the variety of moods and tones you experience in each ‘chapter’, tugging at the heart strings at times then 5 minutes later laughing loudly at a moment that was just so ridiculous yet somehow absolutely perfect for the scene. The cast is also incredibly strong with some really great character portrayals helping to convey all of the necessary emotions in such short little pieces. Not only that, the stories themselves were so compact yet also so full of crazy plot progressions and final twists it was honestly hard to believe they managed to fit it all into just 2 hours. It’s without hesitation that I declare this one of my all-time favourite Coen Brothers films and it’s definitely recommended to anyone who is a fan.

But Wait There’s More: Be prepared for some violence when watching this movie. Nothing is in any way out of context but some it is outrageous in a ridiculous sort of way that will have you laughing and cringing all at the same time.
