Much better than the second one – Avengers chronological re-watch, film #7
Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow
Director: Shane Black
Synopsis: After the events of The Avengers, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is left feeling on edge about possible future events and how he can keep the people he holds dear to him safe. This leads to no sleep, many new Iron Man suits and even some panic attacks. Obviously, his worst fears are realised and a terrorist appears and ultimately threatens the life of Pepper and Tony himself. Separating himself from the woman he loves in order to keep her safe, Tony must figure out what is causing the bombs around the country and track down the evil guy……and be the hero he knows the people need.
Opinion: After the mess that was the second Iron Man film, I am so glad that this one stepped back up and redeemed itself. The story itself, while ridiculous and over the top as with all superhero movies, is actually quite sensible and realistic at times and contains none of the cringy-ness of the previous one. The fact that Tony has anxiety issues and experiences nightmares after the events that occurred in the Avengers was just so great. It made him more like the Tony Stark from the first film again dealing with real issues and understanding that his actions impact everyone around him. Then there is the rest of the cast who all help make this film action packed and fun with special mention to new bad dude Aldrich Killian, who is played by Guy Pearce and damn if he doesn’t do a brilliant job. Especially since the character changes quite drastically from the start of the film to the end and yet every minute of his performance is strong and unforgettable. I also really liked the fact that Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) had more story and screen time, it genuinely made me like her character more. This isn’t to say I previously didn’t like her or anything like that, it’s just that she wasn’t as much of a key plot point in the previous Iron Man films so I didn’t really care if she was there or not but this time around I was much more invested in the character and the roll she played in the story.
Now, it wouldn’t be a Marvel movie without action right, and Iron Man 3 brings it hard with explosions, houses being blown up, fighting on a boat and even an in air fight/daring rescue. Each one of them is well executed with the right balance of adrenaline and tension all rolled in as one……oh and the witty humour of Iron Man of course. Overall, it’s still not the greatness of the first film but it definitely made a huge jump back in the right direction.
Fun Facts: There is an end credits scene as well as some bonus text right completely at the end of all credits. The reason why I flag that is because this film had what felt like a very conclusive ending implying that there would probably be no more Iron Man films….but not necessarily no more Iron Man. Anyway, besides that there is the typical Stan Lee cameo and also a lot of references to the Avengers film & universe as a whole.
