Hey look, Jane’s back – Avengers chronological re-watch, film #8
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston
Director: Alan Taylor
Synopsis: In the lead up to an extremely rare cosmic event called the convergence, scientist Jane (Natalie Portman) finds herself accidentally ported to an unknown world where she comes in contact and accidentally infected with a substance called the aether. When Thor (Chris Hemsworth) discovers this infection he takes Jane back to Asgard to seek help in saving her, however, drawn in by the power of the aether, a once thought to be extinct race of dark elves threatens the safety of Jane, Asgard and the entire universe. If he is to protect Jane, Asgard and all of the 9 realms, Thor must work together with the one person he thought he’d never trust again, his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
Opinion: Remember how I didn’t like the first movie? Well, if you can believe it, this one is worse. I honestly can’t understand how a movie full of great characters can just be so terrible. Yeah, I said it, Thor and Loki are genuinely fun characters and when the dialogue is right their on screen chemistry and comedic timing is actually pretty amazing. That and the cast is again fantastic with Natalie Portman, Kat Denning, Anthony Hopkins and so many more but they can only do so much when the story and the dialogue written for them is so weak. Almost everything about this movie is boring, from the Asgard politics to the relationship between Thor and Jane it just all seems so bland and unexciting. Even the action sequences are kind of predictable and underwhelming. You can clearly see it is a film that wants to be epic and have a really great bad guy and a great family turmoil story but can’t quite hold it all together so instead is an inferior result for something that really could have been great. As usual, I don’t want to shit all over the movie so I will point out that I did laugh in a couple of moments where it was intended to be funny and the special effects were pretty incredible throughout so see, not all bad….just mostly bad.
Fun Facts: Another double end credit scene film once again with one near the start of the credits and then one right at the end. As well as the standard Stan Lee cameo there is also another fun Avengers team mate mini moment within the film so look out for that. And lastly, this is more of a personal fun fact, but it took me a whole 1.5 Thor movies before I realised Zachary Levi was in these movies and now I know I cannot believe I missed it the whole time….I’m a fan, don’t judge, just enjoy the silly missed moment I had.
