Movie Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

captain 2 posterCap is back and it’s even better than the first! – Avengers chronological re-watch, film #9

Stars: Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson
Directors:
Anthony Russo, Joe Russo

Synopsis: Steve Rogers/ Captain America (Chris Evans) is trying to find his place in the modern world but when S.H.I.E.L.D seemingly deceives him on a mission, he finds himself unsure how to tell the good guys from the bad. When all hell breaks loose and a threat reveals it has infected S.H.I.E.L.D from the inside, Steve must work with Black Widow/Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) to find out who the threat is, stop their plan all while trying to avoid their new weapon, The Winter Soldier.

Opinion: Oh, Captain America, I knew there was a reason why you have always been one of my favourite characters and that’s because your movies just keep improving on each other. While the first film was character building and enjoyable in itself, this one is now more developed more explosive and way more intertwined with plot twists and epic reveals. It also has Black Widow & Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), character favourites, along for the ride but there is now also the introduction of The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) who appears to now be set up and here to stay in the Avengers Universe.
As with other I’ve watched recently, it’s interesting to re-watch this one after having seen most of the Avengers Universe series and picking up on the subtle little hints that are randomly dropped throughout which reference other future films or plot points. These are things that aren’t even on the radar at this point, with a key example being the extremely quick almost mis-able name drop of Stephen Strange (aka Doctor Strange) while naming a bunch of people who are on a watch list. I was so stunned I had to rewind because I thought I’d mis-heard but nope, it was him and once again a prime example of how cleverly and intelligently the pieces of this giant story are all written and put together.
As a last note, I’d like to call mention on some of the best action sequences I’ve seen so far in the series I mean Cap landing on the ship at the beginning and taking out all the guards, Fury in the car chase, the street fight, the final fight……they are all fast paced, explosive but ultimately extremely well executed and make for some fantastic viewing.

Fun Facts: The usual Marvel things of course, a Stan Lee cameo (these are starting to get longer now, not just a quick glimpse) and end credit scenes. This movie is another that has 2 of these credit scenes with one mid-way referencing future movies and then another right at the end as a bonus scene.
