avengers 2 posterGetting the gang back together – Avengers chronological re-watch, film #12

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, James Spader
Director:
Joss Whedon

Synopsis: After retrieving Loki’s staff, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) discovers that the core has artificial intelligence which he thinks can extract and use to keep the world safe. While trying to extract it into one of his robots, he accidentally unleashes Ultron (James Spader) a highly intelligent and extremely tyrannical being who is set on destroying the Avengers and the world. The team must put their recent differences and slight bickering aside and work together to face off against Ultron and the powerful twins at his side.

Opinion: So much happens in this film, besides being (in my opinion) better than the first it’s an information overload with the infinity stones finally being explained and other parts of recent films plots points all finding their pieces in the big puzzle. We also have the introduction of two other key players, Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) who help keep the mix new and interesting. My favourite thing about this movie though, is the serious element, the differences that happen between team members and the internal struggles that would naturally occur within such a varied group of people. While their intentions are all good, they all come from very different places and lives so it’s extremely realistic in the sense that Tony would only think of himself and do selfish things, and Cap would say things like “language”, and Thor would just fly off to figure things out and not tell anyone where he was going. The writers could have obviously made these characters all best friends and in agreeance with everything and always on the same page, but it would lack the realism (well the most realism you can get in a superhero movie) and would make the characters too unbelievable…..they need some level of humanity so the people watching can relate and empathise and laugh and cry and love along with them. What I’m basically trying to say is the writing is strong, clever and intelligent which are all things that make a movie great and this is heighted by fantastic visuals and great acting making the whole thing literally explode off screen and keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. While the first movie was much more fun, Age of Ultron is where you settle in for the ride you’ve been prepared for…carrying you through a crazy sequence of loops getting you ready for what’s yet to come.

Fun Facts: There is only one end credits scene in this movie and it’s not even at the end, it’s just near the start and then nothing. I admit I was surprised, I didn’t remember there only being one. Also, the Stan Lee cameo is of course there and humorous as usual.
