Movie Review: Ant Man and the Wasp (2018)

Ant Man 2 posterSimilar to the first Ant Man but he’s like, big sometimes – Avengers chronological re-watch, film #19

Stars: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Michael Douglas
Peyton Reed

Synopsis: A few years after the events of Civil War, Scott (Paul Rudd) has almost completed his 2 years of house arrest and is ready to start a new life free of crime and spend time with his daughter. Enter a strange dream, a phone call to some old friends and a night time kidnapping and Scott is once again back with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) to suit up and work together as Ant Man & Wasp to fight off new enemies and search for clues about her mother…and if she’s still alive.

Opinion: So, this was my first ever watch of this because obviously I wasn’t prepared to dash out and watch a sequel of a movie I wasn’t such a huge fan of. Anyway, I’m not sure if I’m now a fan of Ant Man after watching the first one and Civil War in such close succession to this, but I did enjoy it quite a bit more than I thought I would. The story, well if I’m being honest it’s totally ridiculous and outlandish even for this franchise but hey it’s a superhero that breaks all sorts of laws of physics through the push of a button, so I don’t think I was ever really expecting it to be super realistic and serious. The cast all returns from the first movie and as with any sequel their performances and general personas are a bit more rounded and familiar than before. Along with them there are some fun new faces and a whole lot more ants. It’s over the top, hilarious at times and a whole lot of fun….also, the special effects are way more epic than the first. I mean car chase scenes that have vehicles that shrink and grow throughout and a super-giant Ant Man swimming through the San Francisco harbour is quite a sight to see. As far as an Avengers movie goes it’s still far from being one of my favourites but I’m glad I’ve finally seen it and that I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

Fun Facts: There are a lot of direct mentions to Ant Man’s actions in Captain America: Civil War so make sure you’ve seen that first before watching this. Then as usual there is the Stan Lee cameo and two end credit scenes. Important note with the credit scenes though, their timeline coincides with the final events of Avengers: Infinity War so don’t watch them if you haven’t seen that to avoid so rather large spoilers.
