Opinion: So, DC have had some ups and downs with their films in recent years, pretty much ever since the Dark Knight trilogy they have struggled to find their edge, their mark to create a successful universe. Don’t get me wrong, I know there have been good films (I just haven’t had a chance to watch them yet), but there have also been a lot of bad……..Shazam is finally here to show the world that amazing DC films can be made, they do know how to do it right and for someone who will eternally hold Batman as her favourite DC hero, this movie has successfully pushed a new character into my sights and Shazam has instantly risen up to become a superhero I didn’t realise I was missing from my life.
Everything about this movie is just packaged so well with the friends/family entity, a really evil villain, a fun and likeable hero (who isn’t super perfect but isn’t too imperfect either) and some really fun in-jokes and cameos throughout. The story is also well written forming great characters and with a really nice message of strength through the help of friends and family rather than just going alone. It’s also incredibly funny at times fuelled by the fact that the one screen chemistry between Freddy, Billy & Shazam (Zachary Levi) is really great and they all work so well together that it really makes the friendships and fights believable to watch.
As with any superhero movie there are lots of special effects but Shazam has lightening so there’s lots of that and yes it looks super cool and the evil guys, yep they are very evil looking too. Basically, it’s very well put together, great to look at and an added bonus, filmed in Toronto where I lived for a few years so it was really fun spotting the locations where I had been. Yep I’ve stood on that same corner, it’s totally like I was in the movie….so basically Shazam and I are best friends now. That’s how that works right?
Anyway, it’s fun, it’s action packed, it’s full of life and is everything that I hoped it would be and more. Go and watch it, you will not be disappointed.
Fun Facts: Keep your eyes open for all the fun DC cameos and random extras. They are really fun to see and was an unexpected treat. Also be sure to stay for the credits, there are two scenes and both worth a watch.
