She’s here….and she has the coolest cat ever!
Stars: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn
Directors: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Synopsis: Vers (Brie Larson), a member of the Kree, is kidnapped during a rescue mission and escapes to the closest planet…..Earth. There she discovers that the memories she thought she has lost in an accident many years ago have started to come back and she may not be Kree after all. Instead she sets out to find the people from her memories and in turn discovers she used to be human and there is more to her life and her powers than she previously thought.
Opinion: In typical marvel fashion, this movie is a whole lot of fun from start to finish. Set back in the early 90s it’s a total introduction and back story for this character but be sure to look out for some familiar faces throughout because they are there, and they are linking this film directly to the Avengers universe storyline in a big way. Besides that, though, can we talk about how perfect Brie Larson is for the roll. She brings the right amount of attitude, badass-ness and witty charm to the character showing her strength and power not only in fights but with knowledge and words too. As far as strong female leads go, I think Captain Marvel is one of the best and while this might not be a popular opinion, I think she’s much better than Wonder Woman. Yes, don’t worry, I will explain my reasons…….Wonder Woman is essentially a god while Captain Marvel was human, was from earth and already was a strong independent woman challenging boundaries and being powerful in her own way before getting powers. She also continues to question everything that is being told to her and knows that when something doesn’t feel right, you shouldn’t just follow blindly but instead should think it through and do what is right. Yes, basically what I’m saying is there are a lot of really good messages in this movie that I think are well placed, not too over the top or in your face and very relevant to the time we live in.
Serious notes have now been said so lets get to the fun things like the action which is typical of the marvel style we are used to by being extremely well presented and very fun to watch. The cast as well is on point with every character including one of my favourites Ben Mendelsohn beings as awesome as he usually is. But I do need to note the best, most amazing character in the whole film and that it…..drum roll please…..Goose the cat. Seriously, you wouldn’t think a cat could steal a scene but this one does every time and it’s adorable, hilarious and insanely weird every time.
So overall, it’s a well-constructed and fun introduction to a character that we are all relying on for the next Avengers movie. Welcome Captain Marvel, please save them all.
Fun Facts: The Marvel logo at the beginning has replaced the standard Avengers characters with Stan Lee in his cameos from all the Marvel films, a touching memorial to the man himself. He also has a cameo in the film which plays tribute to Kevin Smith and his movie Stan appeared in back around the time that this film is set. Other than that there are the usual 2 credit scenes, 1 directly linking to the Avengers movies and the other answering my one plot hole question I had through the movie…..in the most perfect hilarious way.
