Movie Review: Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

Royale posterSeems like a nice place to stay…

Stars: Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth
Director:
Drew Goddard

Synopsis: A group of stranger’s cross paths at a hotel called the El Royale. Over the course of one night, they will each impact the lives of the others all while reflecting on their pasts and looking for redemption fir the future.

Opinion: Put together in a chapter like structure, this film is a strange collaboration of stories each showing the past and present of each character. While most of the events do happen in present time, they all overlap each other and you’re essentially piecing one giant puzzle together as you watch. As for story, or rather stories, its quite different and in-depth for each character. The best part is that when they initially appear in the film, the mystery surrounding  each of them has you so intrigued you definitely want to know more and the fact that the back stories are each so weird and different really helps make the film quite captivating to watch.
Now for the performances, I mean let’s mention the fact that it’s a great cast…seriously, look at that quality with Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm, Chris Hemsworth and more and just by looking at those names you know it’s going to be good and none of them disappoint. Each one portrays such a different and weirdly crazy kind of character especially Hamm who just does door to door salesman so well. You’re never really left feeling bored or like you aren’t getting the full experience from any part of the movie and its genuinely a shame it didn’t get more hype and publicity when it was released.
Its weird, different, mysterious, strange and the best mix of everything. I would have liked to see a little bit more about the mystery behind the hotel itself because that is only slightly addressed and never fully explained. In fact, the movie ends with missing information from each of the character stories and my damn curiosity is wishing that I had more, that it explained more, gave me more…..I just want more movie dammit. Overall, it’s fun, crazy and weird but fun and Chris Hemsworth spends most of his screen time with an open or no shirt so yes that’s a nice bonus.

Things to Know: Surprisingly violent. Yep I wasn’t expecting as much as there was, but before you think its constant the whole way through, it’s not, it’s just quite shocking and sudden when it does happen, and I did jump a couple of times from it. All very fitting and in context for the movie though, just a bit of an FYI for people who (like me) aren’t expecting it.
