Movie Review: Rim of the World (2019)

Rim of World poster This movie desperately wants to be every sci-fi or kid gang movie from the 80s or 90s….it’s not though, not even close.

Stars: Jack Gore, Miya Cech, Benjamin Flores Jr., Alessio Scalzotto

Synopsis: An alien invasion happens during summer camp and four teenagers are left on their own after wandering off and missing the evacuation. While trying to figure out what to do, an astronaut in a capsule crash lands near them and enlists their help to get a data key to a lab in Pasadena to essentially save the world.

Opinion: I had seen the trailer before watching, of course, so I was totally expecting a corny movie with terrible CGI, a lame story and probably some bad acting. So, what did I actually get? Well the acting wasn’t terrible all of the time, it had its moments but for the most part it was okay. As for the rest, it was exactly as expected with so many cringy moments and a storyline that has tried to replicate or copy so many movies I lost track after a while. I mean there is this entire kitchen scene where an alien dog (yep that’s right, the aliens have pets) is stalking the kids and it’s a total rip off of the amazing kitchen scene in Jurassic Park It didn’t make me angry or annoyed or anything like that it just seemed like much more of a parody movie than an actually serious one.

What did surprise me though is the random moments throughout that were genuinely hilarious or insanely fun to watch (slow motion fashion show to the 90s song Pony or the actual best line in the film ‘Mannequin Skywalker’). Every time it happened it was so unexpected and so witty, funny or just perfect that I was laughing loudly or rewinding to make sure I’d heard correctly because surely this movie couldn’t be that clever. It was also those moments that kind of made it a bit sad that the rest of the movie couldn’t keep that level of greatness going because, honestly, if that tone had been consistent it would have been an incredible film. Rim of World 2

Overall, it’s a terribly corny movie with an unrealistic storyline, truly awful special effects but enough really great moments throughout that I don’t feel like it was a waste of my time to watch. And also, the soundtrack is kind of crazy awesome with all these random old school hip hops tracks that had me totally singing along and sentimental for my younger years.

Fun Facts: There are a ton of movie references scattered through this movie be it quotes, random things in the background or entire scenes (kitchen scene as mentioned before). It’s actually pretty fun spotting them and makes up for the fact that you’re cringing or rolling your eyes for most of the film.
